The HPS lamp was invented in 1964 by General Electric. Here is one of the first few prototypes saved from the GE Research Lab. It may be the only surviving prototype of its kind. This year the Edison Tech Center will put it on display with the help of the IEEE. The lamp used a material called Lucalox which made the lamp possible. Other materials would not survive the extreme temperatures, pressure and corrosive nature of high pressure sodium discharge.
