When you get a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), the standard of care throughout the world is to be put on blood thinning medicine. Contrary to what you may have been told, blood thinners do NOT dissolve the clot? They just prevent the clot from getting worse. It's your body's own "clot busting mechanism" that breaks down the clot.
Unfortunately, the body does a TERRIBLE job of breaking down blood clots, especially large ones that can occur with May Thurner syndrome or IVC filters. Instead of clearing the clot, the body leaves behind scar tissue. As a result, more than 50% of people who get a large DVT are left with the long-term complications of post thrombotic syndrome (PTS).
