Pediatric Medication Calculations

Nurses providing medication to infants, children and youth are often required to calculate the safe doses by weight. There are several methods nurses can use to calculate pediatric medication doses and this video will review a few of the more common ones.

This video demonstrates four ways you can ensure your pediatric medication dose is correct. Review formulas that consider age, weight, BSA and the nomogram. These strategies can be used to ensure the dose you are giving is correct or to calculate a medication dose for youth when no parameters exist in the drug inserts.

While these methods may not be used very much anymore, it is useful to have an understanding of these formulas in case a weight-based dose is not available on your drug monograph.
