In this video, I’ll perform Czerny’s Etude No. 5🎶
Many who start working through Czerny’s Op. 299 encounter real difficulties with this particular study — it’s noticeably more complex and longer than the ones before and after it. It features a wide range of technical challenges: from left-hand leaps to long, unusual passages in the right hand. At times, it almost feels as if this etude was pieced together from several different ones.
It’s extremely useful for developing technique and learning to combine various technical elements within a single piece.
If you’re studying the opus in order, I actually recommend skipping this etude for now and returning to it a bit later — after the sixth, seventh, or eighth one😉
