Practising the cadence (rhythm) of the second cut in Nakamura Ryu kata 1 using uchikomi (with kirioroshi -straight cut). Achieving correct maai (distance) and hitting with power of whole body movement (rather than upper body) through the 2 steps is the goal. After I explained two of the main mistakes - you can see some improvements in the second round of attempts. You can also see that taking an over long first step leads to many problems as does an over long swing from behind the back. The role of the back foot in delivering power is also key. If it does not connect all the way to the kissaki then the power will be partial and usually out of synch with feet. This is part of the enkeisen - the invisible circle drawn by the cut/strike. The other end of the enkeisen is carrying the power through the target back to tanden and legs (which eliminates the bounce on the target).
