McNamara was the eighth United States Secretary of Defense (1961 to 1968) under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
More than anyone else, he is responsible for the Vietnam War, always pushing JFK and LBJ for greater US commitment, until 1967 when he suddenly realized he had been incorrect and America would not win the war.
For more information see Stanley Karnow, Vietnam: A History (1983) and the documentary The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003).
