How do you balance between giving your team the exposure they need to learn and grow versus the time they need to complete their work tasks? Employee engagement can be challenging when there is so much work to accomplish and even more challenging when you're short-staffed. The big picture - the strategic vision - invites production staff to get involved in administrative tasks so they can grow in those areas. It's like a real-life business school that can only be learned through exposure and experience.
Personally, I remember MANY meetings that I attended where my only purpose for being there was to learn. It was uncomfortable at times, but shadowing my mentor - and pushing those comfort boundaries - is what ultimately gave me the springboard to grow in my career.
As a manager, I sometimes struggle with being on the other side and including my team in meetings where they simply listen. #spongemode Fortunately, my mentor showed me the importance of doing this, and I am happy to pass those opportunities on to my staff.
