How to Play 'Long Tall Sally' - Little Richard - Play Along Lesson - Jez Quayle

This Little Richard classic is presented with the full lyrics and chords, so you can play or sing along with me and learn how to perform this great tune. Rock 'n' roll songs like this are pretty easy to play: just three, easy chords (A, D and E) ...or five chords, if you count the A7 and A6 at the very end of the song ...but they're really just fancy embellishments that can be replaced by plain A major chords.
'Long Tall Sally' has this 12-bar blues chord progression:

I play it in the key of A, like Eddie Cochran did, and I think a bit of Eddie Cochran's version has crept into mine.
As with many rock 'n' roll songs, there are 'stops' during the first few bars of each verse, where you hit the chord once on the first beat of the bar, and stop it ringing. You can here stops like these in Carl Perkins' 'Blue Suede Shoes', Little Richard's 'Ready Teddy' and Eddie Cochran's 'Skinny Jim'.

Long Tall Sally was written by Robert "Bumps" Blackwell, Enotris Johnson, and Little Richard himself. It was released as a single by Richard in March 1956 on the Specialty Records label. The flip side was "Slippin' and Slidin'". Both songs were subsequently released on the LP 'Here's Little Richard' (Specialty, March 1957). Long Tall Sally reached #1 on the Billboard rhythm and blues chart, staying at the top for six of 19 weeks, while peaking at #6 on the pop chart. It received the Cash Box Triple Crown Award in 1956. The song as sung by Little Richard is #55 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It has been covered by many artists, including the Beatles, Eddie Cochran and Elvis Presley.
