Kala Vatana Usal | Kala Vatana Rassa - Vegetarian
The Kala Vatana Usal or Kala Vatana Rassa is offered as prasad or naivedya to Lord Ganesha during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
This recipe of Kala Vatana usal I learnt it from a Maharashtrian colleague she would get this for lunch pretty often. It has a nice nutty flavour and taste. In this recipe we use dry coconut and onion with some spices, and it tastes more like a non-vegertarian meaty dish. Best served with roties rice or puris.
These peas need to be soaked beforehand preferably for 8-10 hours before cooking them. The black vatanas remain separate even when cooked and do not get mushy easily.
List of Ingredients
200 gas kala vatana/ black peas
1/4 cup dry coconut /copra
1 small onion
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp sesame seeds
3 green chillies
1 inch piece ginger
6 pods of garlic
A little coriander leaves
1 medius onion sliced
1 medium tomato chopped
Coriander leaves
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 1/2 tsp chilly powder
1 tsp Kashmiri chilly powder
Salt as per taste
Oil as required
