A chickens spurs should never be twisted and removed with pliers. The spur is an outgrowth of your chickens leg bone and removing the keratin sheath over this bone not only causes your chicken pain but also opens up their leg to infection. Both hens and roosters can develop spurs and their spurs will grow continually for the duration of their lives. Your chickens spurs will need to be routinely trimmed and shaped up. The easiest way to trim your roosters spurs is to have one person carefully cradle your rooster while another rounds out and trims down the spur. A dremel tool or a nail grinder works really well for this and is a safe way to maintain your chickens spurs. A roosters spur does have a quick so you don’t want to trim them back too far. Having vetericyn, Silver honey, gauze, or quick stop on hand is a good idea just incase you trim them too short and have some bleeding. We were able to get Vern’s spurs perfectly manicured in right around 10 minutes. While trimming his spurs we noticed verns toe nails were getting a bit long too. Generally you won’t need to trim your chickens toe nails but if they’re not grinding them down enough while free ranging a pair of dog clippers gets them taken care of quickly and painlessly.
