Pangenesis | Basic Science Series
Slide-1
Pangenesis was Charles Darwin's hypothetical mechanism for heredity
Each part of the body continually emitted its own type of small organic particles called gemmules that aggregated in the gonads, contributing heritable information to the gametes.
He presented this 'provisional hypothesis' in his 1868 work The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication, intending it to fill what he perceived as a major gap in evolutionary theory at the time.
Slide-2
Every part of the body emits tiny particles called gemmules
Which migrate to the gonads and are transferred to offspring.
Gemmules were thought to develop into their associated body parts as offspring matures.
Slide-3
Pangenesis led the ancient Greeks to propose the notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics, in which traits acquired during one’s lifetime become incorporated into one’s hereditary information and are passed on to offspring; for example, people who developed musical ability through diligent study would produce children who are innately endowed with musical ability.
The notion of the inheritance of acquired characteristics also is no longer accepted, but it remained popular through the twentieth century.
The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 – 322 B.C.) was keenly interested in heredity. He rejected the concepts of both pangenesis and the inheritance of acquired characteristics, pointing out that people sometimes resemble past ancestors more than their parents and that acquired characteristics such as mutilated body parts are not passed on.
Aristotle believed that both males and females made contributions to the offspring and that there was a struggle of sorts between male and female contributions.
sexual reproduction, the inheritance of traits, and complex developmental phenomena such as cellular regeneration
