Shared lane markings or sharrows are paint symbols in the road with a bicyclist and arrows indicating where the bike commuter should be riding.
Sharrows are primarily used on roads with lanes that are considered too narrow to split safely between a car and a bike, so these road users should travel single file not side by side.
Note that in this video I did not see a single sharrow in the road. Cities may use other means to highlight road use by bicyclists, including signage.
I am not a big fan of Share The Road traffic signs because I think it is misleading to a lot of people. I am also not a fan of a sign with just a bicylist on it because I feel it gives the impression a bicylist is a road hazard - yeah, that is kind of funny though.
What I would prefer are road signs like the ones with a picture of bicycle and then the words May Use Full Lane, or the signs showing a car and a bike in single file and the words Single File. I think these signs are a lot more helpful and encouraging to cyclists who may feel discouraged or discriminated against and pressured into riding in the street gutter where it is unsafe.
I would also prefer to see sharrows spaced at closer intervals. They seem to be spaced 200 feet apart, and I think shorter intervals would at least make motorists more aware and cyclists more likely to ride on the street in a more practical position (the same way bike lanes make some cyclists feel safer and ride a little more practically even though paint alone does not actually make them safer).
It is true bikes move slower than motor vehicles, but hey, we all have to learn to live together and negotiate our way from point A to point B everyday, right?
See my blog post for examples of a bicycle sharrow, and the signage I mentioned here http://bikeblogger.com/?p=1267
