All countries tweak their national stories to make the past easier to explain. Ordinary people, too, sometimes shape history from their perspectives.
Watch Historian Joyce Haworth explore the role of not-quite-true stories in American history. She will discuss some longstanding “myths" and examine why they have had such staying power. She will also give you reliable ways to test what you hear and get to the truth.
About the presenter:
For twenty years, Joyce Haworth, MA, has brought history alive for seniors. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, she came to the Midwest to go to college, earning degrees in history at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago. She has focused her career on lifelong learning and community education, which has allowed her to go more deeply into topics than is usually possible in undergraduate classrooms.
Currently, she lectures regularly at Oakton College and College of DuPage, as well as a plethora of senior centers, community groups, and independent-living communities. She enjoys the knowledge and perspective that seniors bring to her programs.
