GMT Games announced Volume XIV in the COIN series called The Pure Land: Ōnin War in Muromachi Japan, 1465-1477. In this Livestream, I'll interview its designer, Joe Dewhurst, to talk about his first game. The Pure Land depicts the devastating civil war in 15th century Japan that reduced Kyoto to a smouldering ruin and precipitated the century-long warring states period, the Sengoku Jidai.
The interview will focus on how Joe got into wargaming, then game design, the history behind the game, his approach to research and talk about the mechanics. This design introduces some intriguing innovations in the Counter-Insurgency system, such as peasant revolt and clan loyalty.
