Southern California might be famous for giant bluefin and offshore missions, but this episode is all about staying local and seeing how much variety you can find right in our backyard. We link up with Rich from FishAholic and Michael from Tackle to the People and chase everything from local spotted bay bass to calico and sand bass along the Long Beach breakwall, harbor docks, and oil rigs. Kayak sessions, light line, and structure fishing around the Queen Mary show just how hard these SoCal bass pull on proper inshore gear.
In between bass bites we mix in classic Southern California “bycatch” that keeps things interesting: croaker, sculpin, rockfish, halibut, mackerel and even a little bonito to round things out. There is a quick look back at the offshore part of the trip too, including the bluefin tuna that turned into a full-on culinary experience, but the heartbeat of this episode lives in the harbors, rivers, and breakwalls where local anglers spend most of their time.
From afternoon oil rig missions to morning kayak runs and an urban river packed with turtles, carp, koi and the occasional bass, this is the side of SoCal fishing that does not need a big boat or a passport. If you like spotted bay bass, calico, sand bass and the whole inshore grind, this one is for you. Stoked on Fishing, baby.
