A wild elephant that received treatment twice for a severe leg injury in Athirappilly died yesterday evening after its health continued to deteriorate.
The elephant was first spotted with a deep leg injury in late September at the 8th block of the Kalady Plantation near Athirappilly. Forest officials tranquilized it, provided treatment, and released it back into the forest.
However, as the elephant showed no signs of recovery, it was tranquilized again within the Malayattoor division and given further treatment. The Forest Department continued to monitor its condition regularly.
Later, the elephant was found again in a weakened state near the residential area of Kallala Estate’s 13th block. Forest veterinarians examined it repeatedly and attempted to save the animal by mixing medicines with its food.
Despite continuous efforts, the elephant’s condition worsened, and it died yesterday evening.
