📜 Barrow-in-Furness is now known as the Home of Submarine building but the earliest shipbuilding companies built wooden schooners in small yards along Walney Channel. The forerunner of BAE Systems was established in 1871. Susan Benson, the archivist at Barrow Archive Centre outlines the history of shipbuilding in the town from the mid 19th century to the present day.
