1980: “Never talk about salary in a job interview.”

2010: “Never be the first person to put out a number in a job interview.”

2024: “Look at the salary range in the job description before applying to see if you’re a good fit for each other.”

It took us a while to get here, but salary transparency is on its way.

Covid, 2020, remote work, social activism — all of this has led to a movement that has 7+ US States mandating most employers transparently list salary ranges in job descriptions.

As a freelancer who is used to negotiating rates that are transparent and fair, I’ve always found it odd the W2 world so odd, still shrouded in cryptic etiquette.

Workers need jobs, jobs need workers.

Workers need money, jobs are paying.
