This lecture discusses the various factors that influenced the shaping of the Indian English novel. It contextualises the rise of the Indian English novel within the existing narrative traditions in India, while also shedding light on the significant characteristics of the novel form that were imported and adapted from the West. It also delineates how the Victorian melodrama came to be the form that was widely adapted into the Indian English novel.
