In this video, we break completely new ground in Icelandic fly fishing. For the first time ever, a drift (raft) boat is put into use on an Icelandic river. Together with Fish Partner, we take this boat onto River Blanda in Northern Iceland to explore what fly fishing from a drifting raft can offer in a landscape more commonly known for waterfalls, rugged terrain, and untouched nature.
Fishing alongside my good friend Ahmed, we drift bend after bend through Blanda, targeting primarily brown trout, but in a river that also holds salmon and Arctic char. The day starts slow, with plenty of doubt, missed chances, and fly changes, before everything finally comes together with powerful takes, hard-fighting trout, and some unforgettable moments both from the boat and from the bank.
This is a genuine first for Iceland, testing a new way of fishing in a country where drift boats have never had a place before. We also talk about fly choices, reading water from a drifting perspective, and how this method can be combined with traditional shore fishing.
The drift boat program is now available as a guided experience at Long Valley Lodge on River Blanda, with opportunities to mix drift boat fishing with trout, Arctic char, and salmon fishing in both the main river and its tributaries.
