A beautiful extraordinary sonata; changes the key eight times, which is a unique case. The tonal plan of each part is therefore complex. "The modulating transitions appear as true ordered developments in three sequences." Ralph Kirkpatrick confides: "I can explain on paper all the modulations of sonata 260, but I have never played it without each time having the impression that a miracle was happening." He adds a remark on the deepening of the composer's language and on the functional mastery of the modulations "which Scarlatti once only used to surprise, have here become the core of the poetic imagery he employs to move and transport us."
Actually some chords even sound classical, and beautiful modulations are the key features of this sonata, which perhaps is the reason for why Horowitz had included it in one of the few concert Scarlatti Sonatas.
