The Sword of Allah: Khalid ibn al-Walid

This epic poem is a tribute to Khalid ibn al-Walid, known historically as Saifullah (The Sword of Allah). It vividly depicts his unstoppable force on the battlefield, comparing his presence to a fire rising above the spears.

The verses highlight his legendary campaigns where he shattered the two superpowers of the ancient world: the Persian Empire (Ajam) and the Byzantine Empire (Rum). Like a storm, he broke their formations as if they were dry leaves. The poem personifies death speaking in his hands and declares that victory itself translates his actions.

📜 The Poem (النص العربي الأصلي)

سَلْ عَنْهُ خَيْلَ الْحَرْبِ كَيْفَ تَحمحِمُ
وَاللَّيْلُ يَشْهَدُ وَالْعَدُوُّ يُدَمْدِمُ

بَرَزَ الْوَلِيدُ كَأَنَّهُ نَارٌ عَلَتْ
فَوْقَ الرِّمَاحِ وَسَيْفُهُ يَتَبَسَّمُ

خَالِدْ إِذَا حَمِيَ الْوَطِيسُ بِسَاحَةٍ
صَارَ الرَّدَى فِي كَفِّهِ يَتَكَلَّمُ

يَا سَيْفَ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ أَنْتَ مُهَنَّدٌ
لَا فُلَّ حَدُّكَ حِينَ كُنْتَ تُصَمِّمُ

كَسَرَ الْأَعَاجِمَ وَالرُّومَ بِعَزْمِهِ
فَكَأَنَّهُمْ وَرَقٌ وَهوَ الْمِعْصَمُ

مَا أَوْقَفَتْهُ جَحَافِلٌ أَوْ كَثْرَةٌ
بَلْ كَانَ لِلنَّصْرِ الْمُبِينِ يُتَرْجِمُ

لَوْ كَانَ لِلْمَجْدِ الْعَظِيمِ مَلامِحٌ
لَرَأَيْتَ خَالِدَ فِي الْعُلَا يَتَرَحَّمُ


📜 English Translation

Ask the war horses about him, how they neigh,
While the night bears witness and the enemy rumbles (in fear).

Al-Walid emerged as if he were a fire rising Above the spears,
and his sword was smiling (gleaming).

Khalid, when the battle heats up in the field,
Death begins to speak in his palm.

O Sword of the God, you are a crafted blade,
Your edge was never notched when you were determined.

He broke the Persians (Ajam) and the Romans (Rum) with his resolve,
As if they were leaves and he was the wrist (that crushes them).

No armies or multitudes could stop him;
Rather, he was the translator of clear victory.

If great glory had facial features,
You would see Khalid showing mercy in the heights.


📜 Türkçe Çevirisi

Savaş atlarına sor onu, nasıl kişniyorlar,
Gece şahitlik ederken ve düşman (korkuyla) uğuldarken.

Velid'in oğlu mızrakların üzerinde yükselen
Bir ateş gibi ortaya çıktı ve kılıcı gülümsüyordu.

Halid, meydanda savaş kızıştığı zaman,
Ölüm onun avucunda konuşmaya başlar.

Ey Arş'ın Rabbinin kılıcı, sen (kusursuz) bir çeliksin,
Karar verdiğin zaman keskinliğin asla körelmedi.

Acemleri ve Rumları azmiyle kırdı geçirdi,
Sanki onlar birer yaprak, o ise (onları ezen) bilekti.

Ne ordular durdurabildi onu ne de kalabalıklar,
Aksine o, apaçık bir zaferin tercümanıydı.

Eğer yüce şanın (zaferin) bir yüzü olsaydı,
Halid'i o yüceliklerde dua ederken görürdün.
