मुकेश जी की आवाज बहुत सादी लेकिन दिलों में उतरने वाली आवाज थी। उनके गाने इतने आसान लगते हैं कि उन्हें कोई भी आम आदमी आसानी से गुनगुना सकता है। मशहूर संगीतकार कल्याणजी आनंदजी जब सरस्वती चंद्र फिल्म में मुकेश जी से रिकॉर्डिंग करा रहे थे तो एक गायक ने मुकेश जी की आलोचना करते हुए कहा कि उनके जैसे गाने तो कोई भी गा लेगा। तब आनंदजी ने उन्हें जो चुनौती दी, उसे सुनकर वो गायक भाग गए।
