How to Make a Grim Reaper Scythe Prop, DIY Halloween Decorations

In this video I show you how I made a grim reaper scythe prop to enhance a grim reaper costume or static display.

This is a simple woodworking project that can yield an amazing looking scythe prop if done properly. It was an awesome addition for our grim reaper actor in our haunted forest this year.

Please be sure to keep safety in mind when working with power tools (or hand tools for that matter).

Here are the materials I used:

½” scrap plywood (3-4 feet long)
A warped 2” x 2” (8 feet or longer)
Natural looking synthetic rope
Brown or rust colored spray primer
Spray paint (silver and light tan)
Acrylic craft paint (black, silver & white)
Basic tools, sandpaper, paint brushes, etc.

This is a quick and dirty run-down of the steps in the video:

1. Draw out the design of your blade on scrap plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw or band saw.
2. Sand the blade and shaft with a power sander.
3. Cut a rectangular hole in the shaft for the blade’s tang to fit through.
4. Paint the blade and shaft as desired.
5. Fasten the blade and shaft together with screws.
6. Wrap rope around the blade & shaft joint to hide the screws.
7. Admire your handiwork.
8. Harvest the souls of the dead.
