Liberty Wreck – Tulamben, Bali
The USAT Liberty is a 120-meter-long American cargo ship built in 1918, originally serving in World War I and later requisitioned by the U.S. Army during World War II. In January 1942, while transporting supplies through the Lombok Strait, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Severely damaged but still afloat, the ship was towed to the shores of Tulamben, Bali, where it remained beached for over two decades.

In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung triggered seismic activity that pushed the Liberty off the beach and into the sea. Today, the wreck lies on its side just 25 meters from the shore, submerged between 3 and 30 meters deep. Its steel hull is broken in places, revealing cavernous chambers and twisted beams that hint at its wartime past. Over time, the wreck has become encrusted with vibrant corals, sponges, and sea fans, transforming it into a living reef.

The Liberty’s skeletal structure is still clearly visible: the bow section is partially intact, while the midship and stern areas are more fragmented. Divers can explore cargo holds, engine components, and even the remnants of the ship’s artillery. Despite its age and damage, the Liberty remains a majestic monument to history, now embraced by marine life and the ocean itself

La USAT Liberty è una nave da carico americana lunga 120 metri, costruita nel 1918. Ha prestato servizio durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale e successivamente è stata requisita dall’esercito statunitense nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Nel gennaio 1942, mentre trasportava rifornimenti attraverso lo Stretto di Lombok, fu colpita da un siluro lanciato da un sottomarino giapponese. Gravemente danneggiata ma ancora galleggiante, fu rimorchiata fino alla costa di Tulamben, Bali, dove rimase arenata per oltre vent’anni.

Nel 1963, l’eruzione del Monte Agung provocò movimenti sismici che spinsero la nave in mare. Oggi il relitto giace su un fianco a soli 25 metri dalla riva, sommerso tra i 3 e i 30 metri di profondità. Lo scafo in acciaio è spezzato in vari punti, rivelando camere cavernose e travi contorte che raccontano la sua storia bellica. Col tempo, il relitto è stato ricoperto da coralli, spugne e ventagli di mare, trasformandosi in una barriera vivente.

La struttura scheletrica della Liberty è ancora ben visibile: la prua è parzialmente intatta, mentre la zona centrale e la poppa sono più frammentate. È possibile osservare i vecchi vani di carico, componenti del motore e persino i resti dell’artiglieria di bordo. Nonostante i danni e il passare degli anni, la Liberty rimane un monumento maestoso alla storia, oggi abbracciato dalla vita marina e dal mare stesso
