Fred Bates was born on December 1, 1948, in Brooklyn, New York. He was lovingly raised by his devoted parents, Louise Coleman and James Bates, Sr., alongside his siblings in a close-knit family of six children. Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings James Bates, Eloise Bates, Nancy Bates, and Miriam Bates.
Fred attended P.S. 287 and Junior High School 117 in Brooklyn, New York. He later continued his education at Eastern District High School, where he graduated on June 26, 1967. During his school years, Fred enjoyed playing basketball and fishing, hobbies that reflected his love for both teamwork and peaceful moments outdoors. He completed his general studies with a satisfactory academic record, exemplary behavior, and citizenship.
Never one to stop learning, Fred pursued higher education later in life. In 1986, he attended Manley School of Allied Health Careers, where he completed a 370-hour course and became a Certified Nurse’s Aide. He later earned an Associate Degree, demonstrating his dedication to growth and service.
Fred spent many years working for the State of New York at the Willowbrook Mental Health Facility, serving individuals with mental illness with compassion and care. He retired on July 1, 2011, after years of faithful service.
During his life’s journey, Fred was blessed with love. He shared two daughters, Lashon Bates and Dream Bates, with his beloved companion Novella Howard, who preceded him in death. Fred was a devoted father who spent his life loving and supporting his daughters.
Later in life, Fred met and married Elma Bates. After retirement, the two relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where Fred began a new and joyful chapter. He loved cooking, watching wrestling, dancing, and traveling back to New York to spend time with his daughters and family.
On December 17, 2025, Fred peacefully transitioned from this life to eternal rest. He was welcomed into heaven by his parents, siblings, and loved ones who went before him.
Fred leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Elma Bates; his daughters Lashon Bates and Dream Bates; his son Mandell Howard; his sister Carol Bates; his stepdaughter Tracey; his sons-in-law Darrell and Charlie; grandchildren Scy Bates, Novella Taylor, and Janel; and his beloved great-grandchildren Seven, Ameris, and Alayah. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
Fred Bates was a sweet, loving, and caring father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. Anyone who met Fred felt his warmth, kindness, and joyful spirit. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Until we meet again at the gates of heaven —
Sleep in Peace.
