Yingze Street (YINGZE STREET) is located in Yingze District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China. It is known as the “First Street of Sanjin.” Yingze Street is a landmark, traffic artery, scenic corridor, and vital living thoroughfare of Taiyuan. It also serves as the urban central axis in successive master plans of the city.
Yingze Street was originally an official road during the Ming Dynasty and was planned and built in 1954. From the 9th year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1376) to the 1st year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644), its predecessor, the “East Official Road” and the “West Official Road,” was a muddy dirt path outside the southern city wall of Taiyuan. The road connected two city gates and was mainly used by government officials, playing an important role in facilitating east–west transportation in the city.
In the 2nd year of the Xuantong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1910), Qing officials began constructing a highway from Taiyuan to Jundu. The starting point was located southwest of Wuyi Square, proceeding along the eastern shore of Yingze Lake to the south bank of the Shaying River, and crossing the Fen River north of its mouth. The section from Wuyi Square to the intersection with Qingnian Road later became the predecessor of Yingze Street.
In 1954, Taiyuan’s first-phase urban construction master plan proposed building a 70-meter-wide street based on an existing dirt road south of the old city.
Yingze Street thus became the second widest street in China, following Beijing’s Chang’an Avenue (100 meters wide).
Taiyuan is the capital of Shanxi, China. Taiyuan is the political, economic, cultural and international exchange center of Shanxi Province, containing an industrial base focusing on energy and heavy chemicals. Throughout its long history, Taiyuan was the capital or provisional capital of many dynasties in China, hence the name Lóngchéng.
