STORYLINE:
Hundreds of protesters marched in Davos, Switzerland on Sunday to protest the launch of the World Economic Forum where corporate chiefs and leaders including US President Donald Trump were expected to be in attendance.
Protesters called for an end to capitalism and the wars that are accelerating climate change, and for a democratisation of the economy based on needs.
“We have to stand up. We really have to stay together because I think if there is enough people understanding what is happening, we have the power and it's important just to be around,” said Patricia Muhaem, a demonstrator.
Some protesters came in solidarity with Greenland following Trump's threats to acquire the territory.
“Maybe we can have a voice here instead of the Greenland people which cannot be here now, so that's also something we want to take over and give them a voice,” protester Valentin Eden said to The Associated Press.
It comes as the eight European countries targeted by Trump for a 10% tariff for opposing American control of Greenland blasted the move on Sunday.
The joint statement by some of America’s closest allies signaled a possible turning point in the recent tensions over sovereignty and security nearly 24 hours after Trump’s threat.
It was also the most forceful rebuke of Trump from the European allies since he returned to the White House almost a year ago.
