History of Feldl’s Teufelsrad
Feldl’s Teufelsrad, known in English as The Devil’s Wheel, is one of the oldest and most iconic attractions at Munich’s Oktoberfest.
Its history goes back to 1910, when the Feldl family — traditional showmen from Bavaria — introduced a simple but brilliant idea:
a large spinning wooden disk where participants try to stay seated while the wheel gets faster and faster.
The concept quickly became a sensation. Unlike typical rides, Teufelsrad wasn’t about height, speed, or machines — it was about people, balance, and pure fun. Riders sat on the wooden platform while the operator, known as the Announcer or Moderator, entertained the crowd and gradually increased the wheel’s speed. As the disk spun, people would slide off one by one, and the last person remaining became the winner.
The attraction evolved throughout the decades. In the 1920s and 1930s, Feldl’s Teufelsrad became a beloved Oktoberfest tradition, drawing massive crowds who came not only for the spectacle but also for the humor and skill of the moderators. After World War II, the Feldl family rebuilt and modernized the attraction, keeping its original charm while improving safety.
By the 1960s–1980s, Teufelsrad was firmly established as a cultural symbol of Oktoberfest. The moderators introduced props — such as ropes, balls, and soft obstacles — to make the game funnier and more challenging. Spectators loved cheering for the participants, and the attraction’s chaotic, unpredictable nature became part of its legend.
Today, Feldl’s Teufelsrad remains one of the few traditional Oktoberfest attractions that never became fully mechanical or high-tech.
It still uses the same basic idea from 1910:
a spinning wooden wheel, a lively announcer, a cheering crowd, and people trying not to fall off.
More than a ride, it has become a Bavarian cultural icon, passed down through generations of the Feldl family. Teufelsrad represents the classic Volksfest spirit — humor, competition, togetherness, and a bit of controlled chaos.
