Unwind and Paint with Me | Watercolor Lighthouse, Ocean, Sand & Rocks

Come unwind with me as I paint a dramatic lighthouse scene in watercolor — complete with ocean waves, sandy textures, windswept grasses, and rugged coastal rocks. 🌊 This tutorial is designed for intermediate watercolor artists ready to practice layered washes, crisp edges, and atmospheric details.

Materials I’m using
   •   Paper: Arches watercolor (archival) 140 lb / 300 gsm, cold press
   •   Paints: Winsor & Newton (Professional or Cotman) — suggested colors: Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Sap Green, Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Rose), Neutral Tint (optional)
   •   Brushes: Round #12 #10 and #6, ½” flat, & #4 rigger/liner, old stiff brush for texture
   •   Other: Masking tape, pencil & kneaded eraser, paper towel, water jars,

Color mixes (quick guide)
   •   Sky/Ocean base: Ultramarine + Cobalt (lighter near horizon, deeper toward the top)
   •   Shadow neutrals (for lighthouse + rocks): Ultramarine + Burnt Sienna
   •   Sand: Raw Umber (with Burnt Sienna for warmth)
   •   Grasses: Sap Green + Sienna (shadow)
   •   Rocks: Cobalt Blue + Sienna, layered with Neutral Tint for depth
   •   Accent red: Alizarin Crimson + Neutral Tint for roof and rail details
