Anton Arensky (1861-1906) was a Russian composer known for the lyricism and elegance of his chamber pieces. A pianist himself, he naturally gravitated to composing pieces for the instrument, the best-known of which are his five suites for two pianos. Of the five, Suite No. 1, Op. 15 achieved the greatest popularity, in large part because of its charming second movement, “Waltz”. In Suite No. 2, Op. 23, “Silhouettes”, Arensky gives life to a series of whimsical characters. The first movement (Le Savant) introduces the heavy, ponderous tones (and robes) of a Baroque Era scholar, who perhaps takes his weighty knowledge and inquiry too seriously. “The Coquette” presents a light and playful waltz, whose delicate fluttering is reminiscent of flirtatious laughter. “The Buffoon” (Polichinelle) features dizzying accompaniments that conjure images of a town drunkard carousing about the public square, to comic effect. We are then introduced to “The Dreamer” (Le Reveur) in a peaceful sleeping state, and then gradually become swept along into his fantastical dream world. Finally, “The Dancer” (La Danseuse) sends off the listener with a virtuosic flourish – a Spanish rhythm is introduced and then becomes increasingly embellished and exhibitionistic.
