HEP Seminar - A prior on initial conditions in inflation from the gravitational path integral?

Abstract: We will discuss a speculative connection between quantum gravity and inflationary observables coming from a criterion on which kinds of complex saddle point geometries are allowed to prepare initial conditions for subsequent inflation. After introducing the criterion and motivating it with some examples from AdS/CFT, but also pointing out the drawbacks, we will review the complex geometries that arise when trying to set up initial conditions on a surface specifically by a gravitational path integral that has that surface as its only boundary. Subjecting these geometries to the criterion, surprisingly, turns out to have observational implications.
