Lord Swraj Paul, Baron Paul of Marylebone, is a distinguished British-Indian industrialist, philanthropist, and parliamentarian whose extraordinary journey spans continents, industries, and decades of public service. Born on February 18, 1931, in Jullundur (now Jalandhar), Punjab, India, Swraj Paul began his career working in his father's small steel foundry before pursuing higher education in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. After facing personal tragedy with the loss of his young daughter Ambika, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1966, where he rebuilt his life and established the Caparo Group in 1968—starting with a single steel unit and expanding it into a global industrial powerhouse with operations across Europe, India, and North America. His business success was matched by his deep commitment to philanthropy, with his Ambika Paul Foundation supporting children’s welfare, education, and health initiatives, including a pivotal role in saving the London Zoo. Lord Paul was appointed a life peer in 1996 by Prime Minister John Major, becoming a member of the House of Lords, where he later served as Deputy Speaker and was appointed to the Privy Council. He has held leadership roles at the Universities of Wolverhampton and Westminster and contributed significantly to UK-India relations and infrastructure projects such as the London 2012 Olympics. A recipient of India’s Padma Bhushan in 1983 and numerous other international honors, Lord Paul is widely respected for his vision, perseverance, and values-driven approach to business and public life.
