Building and even maintaining muscle mass after significant weight loss – whether medical weight loss or weight loss surgery - is challenging. In this video, Dr. Shawn Tsuda, bariatric surgeon in Las Vegas, discusses how resistance exercise can help maintain lean muscle mass.
If you are not doing resistance exercises, you will lose as much muscle as you do fat - a 50-50 ratio. So, Dr. Tsuda suggests that patients maintain a reasonable exercise program including calisthenics and potentially light weight lifting or machines at the gym - always with your doctor's knowledge and supervision.
While it may be tempting to overwork your muscles during this weight loss period, it can lead to atrophy and the exact opposite effect of what you were looking for. You may also injure yourself, sidelining your exercise program for days or even weeks and make it that much harder to push forward.
