Living in an apartment doesn't mean that you can't have a pond. We live in Delhi, India, and this is a how to video about how to build / how to make a tropical wooden raised pond container with plywood wood on a balcony (could be an indoor water feature or on a patio). It is a step by step guide to making a pond / building a pond, a DIY project for a water feature on a budget - cheap! Once made, with the plastic pond liner, external filters and an air pump, we added some tropical and coldwater fish - mostly a mixture of orandas, fantails and fancy goldfish.

HOW TO BUILD A FISH POND - DIY MINI WATER FEATURE PROJECT

Even though this is a tropical pond, we chose to stock it mostly with fancy goldfish and typical freshwater coldwater aquarium fish, including fantail goldfish, red caps / red cap orandas, black moors oranda fish, Bristol blue shubunkins with long tails, butterfly koi carp and some orange zebra fish (danios).

The cost of building a pond or container (raised or in the ground) rather than buying a fish tank, can be very affordable and even cheap, although it is always important to have proper filtration, because good water quality and clear water is essential. We have external filters and a UV light, to prevent algae, and ensure crystal clear water at all times - no pea soup water problems or new pond syndrome / new tank syndrome.

By adding dechlorinator to the water, as well as stress coat water conditioner with aloe vera and pond bacteria / aquarium bacteria, to help cycle the filters, we were able to start adding fish quickly. However, we took our time stocking the pond and used bags of filter media, charcoal and zeolite to assist the external aquarium filters / filtration and prevent ammonia spikes in the water. The ammonia levels, water quality and PH were all carefully monitored and the fish were fed sparingly to start with. It is import not to overfeed when setting up a pond / building a pond for coldwater fish.

Oxygen in the water will help maximise the nitrogen cycle and in our homemade pond, we have air pumps, a waterfall (we made this homemade water with rocks and aquarium sealant, with a filter trickle bar for an even flow of water) and a water mister / atomiser. The waterfall is quite a feature of the pond and the fish and goldfish all love the splashing. It's very much like our own aquatic tropical water garden, with lots of plants - real and artificial, including palm trees and live pond plants / pond weed. And at night-time, the clip on LED aquarium nights look great, lighting up the crystal clear water!
