Environmental justice is a concept that you may already know. What many people are not aware of is the racist undertones of environmental justice. Matthew Mills explores these roots. Join Matthew as he tells a story about the origins of environmental justice and how it has created structures that inequitably impact people based on race, even today. Matthew is a social worker and lecturer at UNC Charlotte. He is in his third year as an educator with experience in clinical and community based mental health support. Matthew currently focuses on community engagement and social justice as focal points of expertise, research, and engagement in class. He is passionate about the subject because of his own experiences with the impact of climate change as a Black man living in the south. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
