Roger de Flor, born around 1267 in Brindisi to a German falconer, transformed from a disgraced Knight Templar into the commander of history's most feared mercenary company through a combination of brilliant military leadership and ruthless ambition. After stealing a Templar galley during the fall of Acre in 1291 and profiting from desperate refugees, he established himself as a naval commander before assembling the Grand Catalan Company from battle-hardened almogávar veterans of the Sicilian Vespers. In September 1303, Roger led 6,500 of these elite Spanish warriors aboard 39 galleys to Constantinople, where Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II desperately needed military assistance against the advancing Turkish Beyliks threatening to swallow what remained of his empire. Roger married the emperor's niece Maria Asanina, received the exalted title of Megas Doux, and for two years led his Catalans to spectacular victories across Anatolia, relieving besieged cities like Philadelphia and Cyzicus while amassing enormous wealth through systematic plundering that made them increasingly independent of imperial control.
The company's extraordinary success ultimately sealed their fate when Roger's obvious ambitions to carve out his own principality convinced Emperor Michael IX Palaiologos that the Catalans had become too dangerous to tolerate. On April 30, 1305, at what appeared to be a diplomatic feast in Adrianople, Byzantine soldiers murdered Roger and 300 of his officers in a betrayal that echoed the fictional Red Wedding of Westeros. This treachery unleashed the infamous "Catalan Vengeance" as the surviving mercenaries spent the next seven years systematically devastating Byzantine territories from Thrace to Macedonia.
