As we go through the Gospel of John, you will see that God offers many signs and miracles to prove His message, but when its all said and done, God would rather that we just believed what He has said to start with. That is called faith. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand ….. Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
John Chapter 2
Wine, Whip & Miracles
Verse 1-11 The Wedding and the Wine. (Jesus and His group were invited to a wedding)
As they go to the wedding they find that the wine has run out. (Embarrassing for the one throwing the party)
1) Look in verse 4 and notice the way that Jesus addresses His mother John 2:4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, ___________ have ____ to _______ with thee? mine hour is not yet come. “Woman” sounds wrong to us, but in Bible days, it was a respectful way to talk to ones mother. BUT, over and over in the gospels, Jesus addresses His mother in a way that does not elevate her, or not to make her the object of attention or worship. It is interesting to notice that verse 5 is Mary’s only command in the Bible, and we would do well to obey Mary’s command. (Look in verse 5)
2) Look in verse 7 and answer, what did they fill the pots with? W___________________
3) Look in verse 11 and see the purpose of the miracles in the Bible. This ____________ of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and _____________________ forth his glory; and his disciples ______________ on him.
Every time there is a miracle in the Bible, it is to show that the person speaking is “from God”. Think about it….. When God presents something new to people, God proves (validates) it with a sign or miracle. This is the consistent example from Genesis to Revelation.
Verse 12-17 The Whip during the “worship” (Jesus used a whip to clear out the church house)
A lot of times, people are shocked to see that Jesus acted this way in the Bible. Try to imagine the scene in these verses. NOTICE it is not uncommon for the “Jesus of the Bible” to be different from what we always “thought” about Jesus.
4) Look in verse 15 And when he had made a _______________ of small cords, he ___________ them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers'
money, and ____________________ the tables;
Note: a scourge is a whip with several ends.
Verse 18-25 The Miracles for the Proof. (There is a purpose behind all miracles)
The purpose for signs or miracles is to prove your authority to speak for God.
5) Look in verse 18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What __________ shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
6) Look in verse 19 ….destroy this __________________...
7) Look in verse 21 But he spake of the temple of his ____________.
8) Look in verse 23 . …. many _______________ in his name, when they saw the _______________ which he did.
They believed because of what they saw. That is the purpose of miracles through out the whole Bible.
God can, and will prove Himself every time. That is never a problem for Him. He would like it better if we would believe Him by faith and not demand proof.
Think about it. In verse 22 it is pointed out that they did not understand what Jesus said, but did later (about 3 years later) they came to understand what Jesus had said. Consider it…. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t understand something Jesus says, His own disciples took time to understand as well. Confusion will become clear in time.
Think about it. In verse 25 it is pointed out that “he knew what was in man”. There is nothing “in you” that God does not know about. God sees the deepest, most secret parts of our life. We are literally an open book to God. YET, God still wants us to come to Him.
If you would like to dig deeper here are some verses to look up on your own.
1) We see the word wine and think of only one thing but in the Bible days, wine could mean several things. From Alcohol to grape juice to grape jam to grapes on the vine. When it is alcohol it always speaks about the “age” or fermentation “moving itself” or actions that follow. You will find many different opinions about this though.
Proverbs 23:29-35 ….Proverbs 20:1… Ephesians 5:18
2) It’s weakness of faith that demands a Miracle. The #1 thing that Jesus got on to people about was the lack of faith. He often said seeking a sign was a lack of faith. God wants us to believe Him at his word.
John 20:29… 1 Peter 1:8 …. Mat 12:38-39… 1 Corinthians 1:22
3) Death and resurrection foretold over and over.
John 12:16…Luke 24:7-9 …Matthew 12:39-40 …Matthew 16:21 …. John 10:17-18 … Matthew 27:62-64
