The science:
Ashwagandha:
This adaptogen superstar has been getting a lot of attention lately. A study published in the National Institutes of Health database (A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Standardized Withania somnifera Extract in Subjects with Chronic Stress: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31517...) involved chronically stressed adults who took Ashwagandha extract for 60 days. The results? Those who took Ashwagandha showed significant reductions in stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels compared to the placebo group. Another study (Efficacy and Safety of Ashwagandha Root Extract in Improving Sleep Quality and Reducing Stress in Subjects with Chronic Sleeplessness: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32818...) showed that Ashwagandha not only reduced stress markers but also improved sleep quality in adults with chronic sleeplessness.
Korean Red Ginseng:
This adaptogen powerhouse isn't just about physical energy. A meta-analysis published in the National Institutes of Health database (Ginseng for Cognitive Function in Healthy Elderly Individuals: A Meta-Analysis: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21154...) reviewed multiple studies on Ginseng (including Korean Red Ginseng) and found it may improve cognitive function and even mood in healthy elderly individuals. Another Korean study investigated the effects of Korean Red Ginseng on taxi drivers, a profession notorious for stress (The Effect of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) on Work-Related Stress of Taxi Drivers: Korean Medicine Database). The study found that drivers who received Korean Red Ginseng reported feeling less stressed and fatigued throughout their workday.
Rhodiola Rosea:
This adaptogen warrior might be the key to staying calm under pressure. A pilot study looked at the effects of Rhodiola Rosea combined with Saffron on mild to moderate depression (A Pilot Study of Crocin from Crocus Sativus L. and Rhodiola rosea L. in Mild-to- Moderate Depression: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti..., and while the study focused on depression, it found that the combination improved mood and reduced anxiety symptoms. Another review article (Rhodiola rosea L. as an adaptogen: "Promising" effects in the treatment of depression? A review of recent studies: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37641...) summarizes several studies on Rhodiola Rosea, highlighting its potential benefits for stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
