This is how I build small Jib Cranes to service my lathes.. The crane features a cool swivel system that I am ashamed to say I swiped from someone.. Whoever that someone is, I'm sorry but it is such a great Idea I just had to swipe it! Using a trailer ball for a crane swivel base was just brilliant!
In this series of videos I take you through all the steps I use to make theses cranes. It's not hard if you have basic metal working tools and abilities and when you are finished you will have a great way to change chucks and load awkward material into your lathe.
I make no claims as to the safety of this design and you make them at your own risk.. I load test my cranes to 1 ton before I trust them as they will only ever have to lift about 750 lbs..
Welding skills are critical on this project and if you are not very good at welding I would hire a pro to make the welds...
I also through bolt the upper bracket to sturdy walls or beams using at least 5/8" grade 8 bolts.. Please be careful!
