Bao Gong is a household name in Chinese history for championing the cause of the poor and weak and upholding the principle that no one is above the law. Lady Li, the Emperor’s biological mother was a victim of imperial politics and exiled for many years. Bao Gong managed to save her from her misery and return her to the capital as Empress Dowager. He punished the emperor for his negligence, by smartly avoiding beating the emperor physically and instead, his robe, symbolically. This is an aria by Lady Li after she was rescued by Bao Gong.
