Värttinä (meaning "spindle") is a Finnish folk music band that started as a project by sisters Sari and Mari Kaasinen in 1983 in the village of Rääkkylä, in Karelia, the southeastern region of Finland.
Many transformations have taken place in the band since then.
Värttinä shot into fame with the release of their 1991 album Oi Dai.
The vocalists sing in the Karelian dialect of the Finnish language.
The first album "Värttinä" was released 1987. Värttinä's 13th studio album "Viena" was released 2015.
The 14th studio album "Kyly" (The bath) will be released in 2025
Some Karelian or other dialect words in the original text:
varri, varrii = hot.
tsai, tsaiju = tea.
vesj (vesi) = water
kulakka,kulakko,kulakku = the fist.
kämä (hard, concretion, callus)

liinaharja = a horse
minkä takkii (miksi, minkä takia, minkä vuoksi) = why, for what
