Lawyer Helena Birt explains how the law in Ontario treats how the matrimonial home is shared or equalized in Ontario. She explains how each spouse must calculate their individual net family property (NFP).
We go through a few scenarios with a hypothetical couple, Sandy and Robin. Sandy is the traditional "breadwinner" and Robin is the dependent spouse.
In the next few videos, we introduce you to how the NFP varies depending on whether the couple rented their home, versus owning their home. We also show how whether the home was purchased before or after the wedding day could have an impact on the NFP.
The videos in this series are much longer than usual, but we feel that it's important to take the time to give everyone an example of how these calculations go. So, sit down, grab a coffee and learn how NFP calculations work.
