A look at the operation of Chicago's St. Charles airline bridge from several different perspectives. This bridge was built in 1919 a short distance East of its current location. It was shorted and moved to its current location when this stretch of the Chicago river was straightened in 1930.
If you live near Chicago you have likely seen this bridge, but many people may not be aware that it is still part of an active train line and that the bridge is regularly opened and closed (mainly for the Spring and Fall boat runs).
