Learn Hip Hop Dance: Find the Beat

If you have trouble finding the beat of a song, certain hip hip dance moves can help you find it while still looking cool.

The Pace

Keep your upper arm still throughout this move. If you want, you can also casually look left and right during it.

1. Starting with your right forearm around hip height, move your right forearm out to the right and away from your body, then left and towards it.

2. Move your right forearm out to the right and away from your body again. This time, when it's away, snap your fingers on your right hand. Move it back towards your body.

3. Repeat steps one and two three more times, making sure to keep your motions smooth throughout.

You can also do a simpler version of the pace. In this, do a variation of step one of the pace and repeat. The variation is snapping every time your hand goes towards your body.

The Two Step

This is good for getting your feet and legs loosened up and ready to dance.

1. Start with your feet touching. Step to your right with your right foot, then bring it back in to your left foot, going back to the first position.

2. Step to your left with your left foot, then bring it back in to the first position.

3. Repeat steps one and two two more times.

The Cross Step
1. With your right foot, step to your left in front of your left foot. Place your foot down just to the left of the left foot, leaving your legs crossed.

2. With your left foot, step to the left of your right foot, getting back into a normal stance.

3. With your left foot, step to your right in front of your right foot. Place your foot down just to the right of the right foot, leaving your legs crossed.

4. With your right foot, step to the right of your left foot, getting back into a normal stance.

5. Repeat steps one through four two more times.

The Head Nod

During any of these moves, you can add a rhythmic head nod.

For an up-and-down head nod, tilt your head up, then down, then repeat.
For a side-to-side head nod, tilt your head left towards your left shoulder, then right towards your right shoulder, then repeat.

You can also add the pace to the two step or the cross step.

Tip

If counting helps you learn moves, remember that hip hop dance moves are usually counted in fours or eights.
