At George Washington University (GW), more than 100 graduates walked out during the commencement ceremony in protest of the ongoing war in Gaza. These walkouts took place in two waves during GW President Ellen Granberg's speech. The graduates were protesting to urge the university to divest from companies that support Israel's military operations in Gaza.
In addition to the graduates, about 50 mostly college-aged protestors, including GW students, gathered across the street and chanted throughout the ceremony. Amani Ali, who is half-Palestinian, was among the graduates who walked out. She expressed pride in standing with her people.
This demonstration occurred about a week and a half after police broke up an encampment site in and around University Yard, where protestors had gathered for about two weeks.
These protests at GW are part of a larger wave of student activism across the country. Graduation ceremonies at several universities have faced similar disruptions as pro-Palestinian demonstrators staged walkouts, chants, and waved Palestinian flags during commencement speeches. For example, at Duke University, students booed and walked out on commencement speaker Jerry Seinfeld due to his support for Israel. At UC Berkeley, dozens of graduates stood up with signs reading "Divest," calling for universities to sell their assets in companies with investments in Israel.
These events are part of the broader context of ongoing conflict and protest, and the situation may continue to evolve.
