MATTERSEY: Bassetlaw Parish #8 of 66

Now what can I possibly say about this place? Well, as it turns out lots in fact! For a parish of only 792 people this one has more than it's fair share of things to see and a lot of history behind it all too. We're back in Bassetlaw today for parish number eight as we whistle through the districts North West.

Dating back well over 1,000 years, the village here has some things which show it's passage through time has been quite turbulent. You have to start with the Priory. Located on Abbey Road, a good 15 to 20 minute walk from the main village lie the ruins, once part of a monastery. Monks from Blyth Priory were known to frequent this very site.

The village has a religious theme, it would seem, with not only the Priory but also a Pentecostal Bible College within it's boundaries and for it's size, you have to say that's pretty impressive. All of that is before you've got to the church of All Saints, which in itself is a historical marvel, playing host to some wooden carvings dating from the 14th century.

Half a mile away there's another similar size settlement, built in a bit of a hurry during WWII to provide housing for the workers at Ranskilll munitions factory, and now converted into a pretty desirable housing estate, complete with park and playground.

There was a pretty bridge here until 1953, but both that and it's modern replacement still carry you over the River Idle into MATTERSEY.
