Return to Smokeshell (Chifufua) battle location after 45 years. Day 5, at Chifufua, Angola.
Cleaned up Smokeshell memorial (located in the vicinity of the original Swapo base) and added the 32 and 101 Battalion roll of honour plaque showing the names of the respective soldiers who died in the skirmishes leading up to the Smokeshell battle.
Earlier in the day a debrief of the battle logistics was communicated and discussed, using a sand model for reference, created from original maps of the event.
Later, at the same time of day that the battle took place 45 years previously, a memorial service was conducted, in remembrance of all soldiers who had died on the day - South African and Angolan.
Thereafter, it was time to relax and enjoy afternoon banter. At the end of the day, during a typical copper African sunset, preparations were made for a braai around the log fire, and reminiscing late into the Angolan night, to the glow of a platinum full moon ...
