⚠️ Online impersonation in the UAE can now cost you Dh1 million — and even jail time.
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has issued a clear warning: anyone caught impersonating another person or committing cyber fraud faces up to 1 year in prison and a fine between Dh250,000 and Dh1 million, under Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumors and Cybercrimes.
The Department has launched a digital awareness campaign to help residents recognise how scammers operate online — and how to stay protected.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🔹 4 Common Fraud Tactics:
1️⃣ Impersonating official employees or company representatives.
2️⃣ Calling from fake landlines or email domains mimicking real companies.
3️⃣ Using fake “prize campaigns” or “holiday offers.”
4️⃣ Luring victims with cash prizes, asking for bank details to “transfer winnings.”
🔹 Why People Fall Victim:
Lack of awareness of cyber tricks.
Emotional manipulation — greed, curiosity, fear.
Trusting fake profiles or unverified accounts.
Believing “too good to be true” offers without checking sources.
🔹 How to Stay Safe Online:
✅ Be skeptical of offers or messages that sound unreal.
✅ Never share your banking or personal data.
✅ Check comments, reviews, and official verification marks.
✅ Watch for spelling errors or suspicious links.
✅ Remember: legit prizes never ask for payment to claim rewards.
By staying informed and cautious, residents can prevent major losses and help authorities crack down on cybercriminals.
