Chapter 73 – SHENZHEN FOR THE HOLIDAYS – Part 2

OCT HARBOUR - We went to see the show at OCT Harbour, coincidentally the home of the impressive DJI flagship store. We were seated in a large open-air amphitheatre with a stage in front, and a body of water forming the backdrop. At the opening, cast members threw molten metal into the air, producing impressive showers of sparks. They were joined by dancers on stage, followed by fountains, pyro effects and more dancers with LED hoops. There was a plot to the show, but since it was in Chinese and the were no subtitles, I have no idea about the storyline. The production of the show was very well executed, featuring a clever use of a DJI Mavic drone to simulate a flying jellyfish, as well as flame effects, gigantic water screens with video projections, moving fountains, and lasers, culminating in a fireworks finale. HUAQIANG BEI – I went to visit Huaqiang Bei, the enormous electronics supermarket area in Shenzhen, which spans a few city blocks, as I was looking for some camera accessories. Here you will find a vast array of electronics items, from basic components to finished products of every description. This short tour of only a couple of floors of the two main buildings gives you but a brief glimpse at the multitude of electronic products available.
NEW DRONE - You may remember that in Chapter 53, I foolishly flew my drone backwards into the muddy banks of the Mekong River and damaged it. While in Shenzhen, I took it to the DJI flagship store and had it repaired and upgraded. One Sunday, we decided to take the metro to the opposite end of Shenzhen Bay at Xiaomeisha station to go and fly the drone. This newly built extension of line 8 had some beautifully decorated stations. Since we were mainly interested in flyting the drone… we descended a series of steps to find a not-so-crowded spot near the water, and I flew the drone over the nearby beach. Then Neo took a turn flying over the new aquarium. Then I flew the drone all the way to the distant point which had a small lighthouse.
NEW YEAR'S EVE - For New Year’s Eve we decided to go to Windows of the World, a theme park that features miniature replicas of famous landmarks and buildings from around the world. Naturally, the pace was packed to the hilt with standing room only. They were offering some live music below the half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower. One of the reasons we chose this place for New Year's Eve was the promoted drone show, I have never seen one live before. The Drones taking off was an interesting sight, but the drone show was not as complex as some I have seen on TV and the internet as it consisted mostly of static effects, park promos, and advertising. At midnight, there was the traditional countdown, in Chinese, followed a fireworks display from the top of the miniature Arc de Triomphe that was quite impressive, accompanied by some laser beam effects.
